Numeracy Projects

Current Projects

Numeracy Research Project (2001 – 2003)
This is a cross-sectoral (EDWA, CEO and AISWA) research project ($0.5 million) commissioned by DETYA and hosted by the Centre for Learning, Change and Development at Murdoch University. Redgum Consulting developed the proposal and is directing the research. The project is using both quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate primary students’ capacity to use mathematics across the curriculum.

Middle Years Numeracy Research Project (2002/2003)
The Australian National Schools Network in partnership with the University of Canberra and Redgum Consulting has been contracted by the ACT Department of Education and Children’s Services to conduct a teacher action research project focusing on numeracy across the curriculum.

Numeracy Across the Curriculum Booklet (2001/2002)
Contracted by the NSW DSP to write a booklet on issues pertaining to numeracy across the curriculum using examples from the research circle ran with teachers in NSW in 2000.

School Planning Framework (2002)

Numeracy Examples (2001)
Contracted by EDWA to develop a set of brochures outlining examples of Numeracy Across the Curriculum for primary and secondary school and in a range of Learning Areas.

Completed Projects

SA Numeracy Research Circle (2001)
Developed and lead the research circles, with Murdoch University and for the Department of Training and Education in SA. It involved teachers from members of the SA Middle Schooling Network in SA, meeting for professional development on numeracy and on conducting research, planning, conducting and documenting action research and action learning projects.

ACT Numeracy Research Circles (2000)
Developed and lead the research circles, with the Australian National Schools Network and for the Department of Education and Children’s Services in the ACT. It involved teachers from primary and high schools in Canberra (ACT). This involved teachers meeting for professional development on numeracy and on conducting research, planning, conducting and documenting action research and action learning projects.

NSW Numeracy Research Circle (2000)
Developed and lead the research circle, with the Australian National Schools Network and for the Disadvantaged Schools Program in the NSW Department of Education. It involved teachers from a group of primary and high schools from city and rural locations in NSW. This involved teachers meeting for professional development on numeracy and on conducting research, planning, conducting and documenting action research and action learning projects.

Numeracy across the Curriculum (1997-98)
An ARC collaborative Project between Murdoch University and the Education Department of WA and directed by John Hogan. This was two-year curriculum project conducted research in 9 schools, primary and secondary, rural and metropolitan, investigating teaching and learning across the learning areas in order to inform the development of a framework for numeracy.

Key Competency Project (1995-96) –
RIUMIT
A National DEETYA Key Competency Project run by the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers (Inc) (AAMT), directed by John Hogan, investigating the rich interpretation of the key competency using mathematical ideas and techniques in practical settings.
